What is an adsorption isotherm? Describe Freundlich’s adsorption isotherm.

Answer

Adsorption isotherm is the variation of the mass of the gas (adsorbate) adsorbed per gram of the adsorbent with pressure at constant temperature.

Freundlich adsorption isotherm

Freundlich adsorption isothermic given an empirical relationship between the quantity of gas adsorption by the unit mass of solid adsorbent and pressure at a specific temperature.

From the given plot it is clear that at pressure

(x)/(M) reaches the maximum values  is called the saturation pressure.

K and n are constants for a given adsorbate and adsorbent at a particular temperature.

At high pressure 1/n = 0, hence extent of adsorption becomes independent of pressure.
